Our principal lawyer, John Burns, was honored with the 2007 Hero’s Award be Legal Aid of Dakota County due to his ongoing work for legal aid. He has been featured in Who’s Who in Family Law, lists of top lawyers, and voted by his peers as a Super Lawyer in 2003 and 2004. John received the “BV distinguished” peer review rating from Martindale Hubbell. He is a past president of the First District Bar Association, and the Dakota County Bar Association. He has also served on the First District Ethics Committee for several years.
He graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato with majors in History and Political Science while also playing on the football team. John received his law degree from the Indiana University School of Law where he graduated cum laude. While there he competed in moot court competitions, receiving the highest score at the national level.
He served as a law clerk at the Indiana Supreme Court before returning to Minnesota to join a group practice in 1992. He has established himself with the bench and bar in Dakota and Scott Counties since opening his private practice in 1994. He has written several articles and teaches continuing education courses to attorneys on a variety of family law topics. He enjoys coaching youth sports in the community, particularly football and basketball.
